Civil society groups opposed to gas production by TotalEnergies off the South African coast have raised red flags over the impact it would have on whales and other sea animals, as well as the livelihoods of fishing communities, and human health.

In September last year, TotalEnergies launched a new application process to Petroleum Agency South Africa to drill from the gas fields in blocks 11B/12B off Mossel Bay's coast. TotalEnergies and others QatarEnergy, Canadian Natural Resources International and a South African consortium hold exploration rights to block 11B/12B. The joint venture wants to convert the exploration right to a production right.
