Why this Spanish company plans to cut 2,300 jobs

Still, Grifols has provided few details regarding exactly which facilities cuts will take place. A company spokesperson said changes to the company's plasma operations will occur mainly in the United States and cuts in corporate functions will be spread across the country.

But Grifols is perhaps best known for how it gathers plasma — the clear, yellowish liquid portion of blood — through a network of plasma donation centers. Plasma then can be turned into plasma-based medicines, like those for the blood-clotting disorder hemophilia, or used by hospitals to prevent shock after severe trauma.
