As Toronto looks to elect a new mayor in the coming months, observers say international investors are looking for another business-savvy leader like John Tory to take the helm.

Tory's tenure came to an end on Friday, capping off a turbulent week at Toronto City Hall that started Feb. 10 when he announced his resignation after admitting he had an "inappropriate relationship" with a former staffer.

Tory, 68, is a member of Toronto's business and political elite, and honed that reputation over the course of his business and broadcasting careers before entering politics as a straitlaced moderate conservative. He sits on the advisory committee of the Rogers family trust, which controls Rogers Communications Inc.Robert Speel, an associate professor of political science in Erie, Pa.

But despite her lack of business ties, observers say investors eyeing Toronto for future opportunities won't be affected by McKelvie taking over temporarily.

So 'business-savvy' he let the city crumble while wasting money on the stupidest possible investments.

Who cares what they want? What about us who live here FFS?

and kindergarten students would be looking for a mayor that gives out candy, but they don't vote either.

Now this might be too out there of an idea, but hear me out: What if cities were governed for the benefit of those living it, rather than the investors who profit off it? I know, I know what you're thinking. But sometimes (always) profit isn't everything.

Toronto needs a revolution, not the status quo.

More money laundering in Toronto

A lot of international investors buying up Toronto real estate. Who cares about them?

This is the last thing we need

Oh sure! 🙄 “Business savvy” mayor like JohnTory did nothing for reducing poverty in TO/nothing about housing crisis/nothing about improving access to services needed by less privileged Torontonians. Nor did catering to business elite improve life in the city..soooooo 🤷🏻‍♀️

NeverVoteConservative as they DO NOT, never have & never will work for the people. And yes, CanadianMediaFailed miserably!

I am not interested in what international investors want. I live here.

Can we get a hot take on what coal miners in Newcastle think about what the next Mayor of Toronto means for bakers in Paris

I'd rather a world class city planner or civil engineer...or perhaps a civil rights lawyer....or maybe a life long community leader. They hopefully could help Toronto meet it's true potential, instead of private businesses making record profits with the help of my tax dollars.

Brutal CBC. Brutal headline.

Shouldn't be talking about what is in the best interest of the people who live in Toronto?. At least I hope those who have the right to vote in Toronto keep that in mind, we will avoid regretting it later

The push from the status quo... you were waiting for it

What? Are you letting 12 yr old write for you now?

CBC really digging its own grave these days

take 15 minutes and go vote Toronto

Well good for the international investors. As a citizen of Toronto, however, I could care less about those international investors. They’ve not done one damned thing to help get the homeless housed, or into warm spaces on subzero nights.

International investors = campaign funding from foreign entities

We need a Mayor with balls who will stand up to the mind boggling spending that Toronto's socialist council keeps approving

Please. Try to maintain a shred of dignity, CBC.

oh man you fucking corporate shills are getting destroyed in the quote tweets, i wouldnt want to be the loser who wrote this looking themselves in the mirror today

who the fuck cares what people who dont even live in the city think?

Business savvy is code for Has Sex With Subordinate?

Welp, then I guess it's a good thing that 'international investors' don't get to vote in our election. Because the last thing this city needs is another Bay Street failson like John Tory.

What about the people of Toronto? Why do you people always look at international investors 😡😡

How about we make Toronto a place that everyone can afford to live in?

Who cares what corporate profiteers want. Choose someone who will work to make Toronto liveable Toronto

Just keep my taxes at or below inflation and keep the streets and TTC safe for our vulnerable and elderly and you got my vote.

Why the 🤬 do we care what foreign investors want? They're a huge reason why housing costs have soared and why our taxes are used to subsidize businesses.

Fortunately, international investors do not get to vote.

I’m not really interested in painting myself in honey to attract vultures.

Ignore the 'international investors' because 'business-savvy leaders' are by their very nature interested in themselves not in the citizens of Toronto. Business will survive & grow in TO without them...lots of savvy Toronto small business with money to grow.

All the people that want to ruin our city would really like a “savvy” replacement so they can continue using our city to launder their money and our housing as an investment.

Who is electing who?

This is bullshit! Big companies looking for locations want value for money housing, safe & clean streets, great community life opportunities. All gone with the housing crisis, which means people sleeping the streets, and housed people having less and less money for other things.

Business savvy?

Toronto seeks the cbc to be defunded

Here's a novel idea - how about having a mayor for once that seeks to improve Toronto and serve and help the people of Toronto? Rather than one that exists to benefit investors and property developers and line their pockets? Just a thought.

Exactly why we need a “lefty mayor”. What could be more necessary than fordnation’s worst nightmare?

International investors can take a long walk down a short pier. So can these so called “observers”.

What exactly are you trying to say here? “Business-savvy” or friendly and beholding to business interests and foreign investors? Not the same thing. Toronto needs a leader who will look out for the interests of its citizens. All of them.

DanaBoettger Businesses would do well to remember an affordable city with happy residents is a livible city which is good for business.

The problem is, there are no business-savvy politicians leftist in Metro. lol

Yeah yeah…. We’re well aware that Toronto residents didn’t actually elect Tory..

International investors….meaning brown paper bags….hope JohnTory accounts are investigated including the offshore ones

One problem with recent conservative mayors is that while they appear to have kept property taxes lower, they wanted expenditures to go towards inefficient projects such as re-building the elevated Gardiner East. topoli

Chris Sky announced he's running for mayor of Toronto yesterday.

not another John Tory....

🤢🤮🤢

Someone needs to take the helm that can right the ship - it’s sinking fast. I use to like visiting, but the last time I saw a bunch of people smoking crack in plain daylight.

Who says Tory was business savvy?

Did they invest in SmartTrack?

Wait till you meet EggMan. EggMan4Mayor

Why? So the next dweeb can finish the job of destroying the city?

A part of the bourgeoisie is desirous of redressing social grievances in order to secure the continued existence of bourgeois society: some guy named Karl.

Sp Jim Grit is no chance

defundtheCBC

NO we DO NOT want another TORY 🤦‍♀️

We’ll, that will be ZERO councillors since most are life-long politicians with little or no actual work experience in the real world.

International investors doesn't live here

We’re doomed

Translation: The Chinese Communist Party will select the winner of this election, just as they did in the 2021 Canadian federal election.

John Tory is a lawyer and not business savvy. He sucked up to big business and big government

“Business savvy” or “business friendly” - not necessarily the same thing.

How about someone with a little humanity

oh cool. why bother asking the voters

CBCPitchbot

Maybe international investors should be arrested for trying to influence political affairs.

Business savvy🤮🤮? Overpriced housing, potholes size of lake, garbage everywhere nobody bother to clean, snow removals when barely any snow, people sleep on bus stops, & most importantly 'You do not f*ck people in office on public dime'. And probably much more we don't know yet

What about low-income residents who are looking to stay safe and housed in this city? Where do their priorities rank alongside ‘international investors’? Whose voices should we prioritize?

We both know what’s coming….Progressive, woke candidate who gushes over labour unions and further degrades what once was a great city.

johntory right now! JohnTory

Business Savy? You mean business blind leader.. Elect someone that will sell out the residents of the Toronto

If investors make money in Toronto, where does the money come from?

How is he business savvy. He only failed up

Nonsense. Tory was financially inept

🤣🤣🤣b🤣u🤣s🤣i🤣n🤣e🤣s🤣s🤣🤣🤣s🤣a🤣v🤣v🤣y🤣🤣🤣

Wait, this isn't CBCPitchbot ?

Careful, you investigate any harder and you might hurt yourself!

CBCPitchbot are you sure this wasn't your doing?

pitchbot

Yes. A progressive ambitious modern smart city builder. Not a stodgy, penny pinching, rigid, car-centric mayor with zero ambition for city.

New mayor should only have one priority : getting housing built. Multiple priorities will only lead to failure.

International investors' moms need to give them a timeout to consider boundaries.

When electing a mayor, it is important to only consider the views of international investors.

Did you ask JustinTrudeau what the Chinese government wants in a mayor?

Do Observers (the bald guys from Fringe, pilot filmed in Toronto) know that when people say a bit of a city 'could be Toronto' they're not saying it is useful or beneficial to Toronto citizens?

Why not comment on what Torontonians who care passionately about our city want? cdnmedia

Personally, I think the people that live in Toronto are the ones that have opinions that matter.

Here’s our so called “public broadcaster” promoting Tory to “international investors” as “business savvy”. Toronto is a city, not a business. Its citizens fund your network through their taxes. Give them a platform. The rich and powerful can buy their own shills.

business isnt government

I thought everyone was unhappy about international investors?

People from outside Toronto are saying they’re going to manipulate you guys again, and get the person they want.

People of Toronto vote. Need to vote. Not international investors

So corporations are going to push another centrist right wing politician that doesn't listen to the people? Whoever they cover positively or big corporations want is the one that I won't vote for.

Yeah because John Tory has made Toronto a lot better.... right

International investors have totally made Toronto a better place to live ;)

International investors are greedy, blood sucking leeches sucking the life out of our communities by demanding we give over our hard earned tax dollars to subsidize their operations, which is then converted into profits for executives and shareholders

'business savvy' like in an un-built Smart Track kind of way?

'business savvy' aka a nepo baby who was born into wealth and oversaw the crumbling of Toronto public infrastructure 👍

Who gives a shit what observers say about international investors regarding a municipal election?

I am very much hoping that the media will engage in the debate rather than set its terms. There are a lot of people who have ideas that need to be heard. I don't think engaging with foreign investors is a good place to start.

How many votes do international investors have? Just kidding - in a city where a mayoral campaign needs $3m-$5m to have a chance we know money talks

As Toronto looks to elect a new mayor in the coming months, observers say rich, non-Torontonians are looking for someone who will maintain Tory’s status quo.

Or we could get someone good instead

Maybe focus on what the residents of Toronto are looking for!

Screw international investors. The record of the last ten years is decline fit the majority, riches for the minority. Time to serve the people for a change.

It's irresponsible of CBC cbc to call him business savvy. The man was corrupt. For years he disregarded the many needs of Torontonians. He & fordnation padded the pockets of their buddies. Call it shady business. Call it corruption. Don't call it 'savvy'

Nobody cares about Tory’s private life.. Toronto residents want to know how to solve the homeless crisis and non-affordable housing situation, and curb violence. All these aspects are interconnected and they need a public discussion and solution.

And so it continues. Solid journalistic effort to ensure status quo. Kinda surprised you didn't toss in a link to freeloader tenant piece for kix

The international investors over the past 15 years or so, created a housing crisis, cultural ghettos and economic disparity, while all levels of government gleefully facilitated the influx of shady money. More and more hardworking Canadians including immigrants are leaving.

🤮

Well let's be sure to do what foreign investors want.

Well if that's the case, I'm voting for Zanta.
