KUALA LUMPUR – Madam Aida Nurin, 44, used to find it difficult to find clothes that met religious obligations without looking too fuddy-duddy.

Selangor, Malaysia’s richest state, aims to position itself as a global halal hub to meet future demand for halal products internationally. The state’s ambitions are in line with the Twelfth Malaysia Plan, in which boosting the halal industry to capture a more significant share of the global halal market is one of the country’s key economic growth strategies.

The largest component of the halal economy in Malaysia is the food service sector, with business revenue in the sector estimated at RM128.8 billion in 2021, and forecast to reach RM201.02 billion by 2025.
