Federal Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne is planning to rule on Rogers Communications Inc.’s $20-billion takeover of Shaw Communications Inc. on Friday morning, according to two sources.
The deal, which would combine Canada’s two largest cable networks, was first announced two years ago. The Globe previously reported that Mr. Champagne was asking for written undertakings that Quebecor would reduce wireless prices and that Rogers would fulfill its commitment to spend $1-billion rolling out high-speed internet to rural, remote and Indigenous communities.
However, the watchdog’s opposition to the takeover was dismissed late last year by the Competition Tribunal, a quasi-judicial body that adjudicates cases brought by the bureau, after a month-long hearing that included testimony from more than 40 witnesses.
Unfortunately for Rogers, they’re still stuck operating in Canada.
They paid him off, no doubt.
Government has abdicated their responsibilities
