In the wake of the electricity state of disaster being terminated, stakeholders are calling for the energy crisis to still be treated with the urgency it deserves. While views are mixed on the efficacy of declaring a state of disaster, calls for ongoing aggressive intervention were unanimous.
Government had on Wednesday published a gazette indicating that the state of disaster, announced roughly two months ago, to tackle the energy crisis has come to an end. This comes amid legal challenges launched by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse and trade union Solidarity, who sought for the decision to be reviewed and set aside.
Government had not yet submitted replying affidavits, and a court date had not yet been set. Both organisations on Wednesday received notice from the state attorney that the state of disaster would be terminated. This means the legal challenges will be withdrawn.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism. Thereafter you will be billed R75 per month.
