Government to overhaul visa regulations to boost investment

President Cyril Ramaphosa shaking hands with Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel at the 5th South African Investment ConferenceGovernment plans to overhaul the work visa regime to boost investment and attract required skills into the country.

We will introduce a trusted employer scheme for qualifying companies and establish a points-based system to provide more flexible pathways for skilled applicants, in line with global best practice. We will introduce new visa categories for remote workers and start-ups to attract dynamic entrepreneurs and promote spending in our economy.

Speaking at the fifth SA Investment Conference, President Cyril Ramaphosa said reforms would include streamlining application requirements to reduce the time for getting a work visa.In her newsletter earlier this month, Business Leadership SA chief executive Busisiwe Mavuso decried the chaos created by the visa system. She said this was a serious impediment to the economy.

"Some 56 000 foreigners working or intending to work in South Africa were facing the cancellation of their visas at the end of March, purely because home affairs has been unable to process their applications. They were given a last-minute reprieve – two days before the deadline – extending the validity of their existing status until the end of the year.
