One person died and one was injured in an explosion Tuesday morning at the Seneca Petroleum Company refinery at 12460 New Ave. in the Lemont area, Will County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

About 10 a.m., an asphalt tank exploded at the refinery, Hoffmeyer said.

One person died in the explosion, and one injured person was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.Several fire departments responded to the scene and had extinguished the fire by 10:30 a.m., Hoffmeyer said.
