SANTA CLARA — The 49ers’ payroll department got a head start Friday on company business, before the team could make its first picks in the NFL draft.

To create room under the salary cap, the 49ers restructured running back Christian McCaffrey’s contract, freeing $8.6 million in room, ESPN’s Field Yates reported.Aiyuk’s fifth-year option was a mere formality after his first 1,000-yard season, and the 49ers have confirmed they’ve made that decision ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

Fellow 2020 first-round pick Javon Kinlaw, an injury-laden defensive tackle, is not expected to have his fifth-year option exercised as he enters the final year of his rookie deal with a $10.5 million salary.
