During Knighten's time in Brazil, which began in 2014, he conducted an email scheme caused businesses he defrauded to lose more than $3 million, the release said. Using the alias Michael Sabatine, he sent fraudulent emails requesting changes to payment information on invoices that were. The invoices included where payments should be made, and one institution named was a bank in Las Vegas. The accounts he listed were not the vendor's actual bank account, according to the release.
Using the name Sabatine, Knighten also sent emails in March 2014 to Bennu Oil and Gas Company in Houston. He told the company he was the financial director of Ceona Offshore and requested payments due to Ceona from Bennu. In May 2014, posing as Sabatine, he sent additional emails to Bennu causing the company to send a wire transfer of $651,125 to a bank account in Portugal, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
