Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says that organised crime with links to the notorious KwaZulu-Natal construction mafia has infiltrated Eskom's procurement division, with insiders and outsiders working together to defraud the company.
In an interview on Friday in Cape Town, Ramokgopa described crime, corruption and sabotage as"a big, big part of the problem at Eskom." When Ramokgopa was appointed in March, he toured Eskom's power stations, where he was briefed on specific engineering and mechanical problems, prompting him to declare that the poor performance of the plant was due to the state of the machinery and equipment rather than sabotage or corruption. At the time, the country was reeling from allegations by former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter that organised syndicates with political links were looting Eskom.
