During the trial, it was revealed that Liu was informed by a company executive days after he was hired in June 2022 that he would have to participate in a distance-running test. His colleagues then assured him that the test was not a joke and that he will lose his job should he not be able to finish the run in under 30 minutes.

He was only able to run about one kilometre before experiencing heatstroke-like symptoms and gave up.
