A law society tribunal has accepted a joint position granting Guillermo Escobedo-Hoyo the right to provide legal services again under certain restrictions.Escobedo-Hoyo was spared prison in the murder case after being found not criminally responsible due to mental illness and was shown a hospital room instead of a cell.

His last walk in that wonderful world was on the night of Jan. 17, 2018. It was just after 8 p.m. and Nick was on the sidewalk when Escobedo-Hoyo aimed his car and ran him over in what doctors said was a psychotic break that involved smashing his car into a light standard and then killing young Nick.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger told court back in 2019 there was no measure of justice and the not criminally responsible ruling would never be seen as justice by Hickey’s family. In moving victim-impact statements at the end of the murder case in 2019, Nick’s family, friends and teachers painted a portrait of a young man who had to work harder than most.Article content

Jennifer Scott was a teacher who championed Nick’s success-against-odds in school, and she praised his bold imagination and sweet disposition. Though Escobedo-Hoyo has been discharged on conditions from the psychiatric hospital, the Ontario Review Board says it will meet once a year until it determines he no longer poses a significant threat to public safety and grants him an absolute discharge.Article content
