Matthew Dressler | Special to PennLivePennDOT will hold a public meeting Aug. 1 on the proposed overhaul of the Market Street Bridge, a project that is expected to begin construction in 2025.
PennDOT also plans to construct a second span, described as a steel “utility bridge,” just downstream of the Market Street Bridge. All utilities – including sewer, gas, and telecommunications lines – will be relocated to this new crossing, which will also serve as a dedicated bike and pedestrian bridge.
The existing bridge spans show significant deterioration to the sidewalks, according to PennDOT, with the western downstream sidewalk currently closed due to cracking and problems with the underlying beams. The project will be done in three phases, each lasting between 18 months and two years, according to PennDOT’s plans, with an anticipated start date in 2025. The second and third construction phases will involve detouring westbound traffic. The eastern span is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is noted for its Art Deco lighting and two entrance columns salvaged from the State Capitol after it was destroyed by fire in 1897.
