Illinois has a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of carbon capture adoption and lead the fight against climate change.

The carbon sequestration well at the Archer Daniels Midland Co. ethanol plant in Decatur in 2009.Producing reliable and affordable energy to meet growing societal demands in an environmentally responsible manner is a difficult needle to thread. So how do we do it?

The scientific and engineering proof of CO2 storage has been supported by the U.S. Department of Energy in many research partnerships for the past 20 years. In fact, one of the flagship examples of that partnership is at the Archer Daniels Midland Co. site in Decatur. This project began while I was at the Department of Energy, and it has been nothing short of a shining example of success.

Leading organizations such as the Houston CCS Alliance and the University of Houston’s Center for Carbon Management in Energy are confident that theensures a proven process for transporting and storing CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions in geological formations. Illinois’ geology is a long-term state asset for CCUS as the Mount Simon geologic formation is recognized by the Department of Energy to be among the most studied and operationally demonstrated formations in the U.S.

, a network of 25 states, researchers concluded carbon capture deployment at 28 industrial and power facilities could capture 47.5 million metric tons of CO2 annually over a 15-year period. The same study found carbon transportation infrastructure can generate as much as $15.3 billion in private investment, 4,400 projects jobs, and 2,620 ongoing operations jobs during the same period.concluded that carbon capture technology could add $57.
