Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has taken a sly dig at New Zealand's sporting prowess after an outgoing politician suggested the country merge with Australia.

Retiring Labour MP Jamie Strange used a speech to parliament last Thursday to urge fellow politicians to consider becoming part of Australia, suggesting it would help cut costs and promote economic growth.

While the suggestion may seem far fetched, it is in fact technically possible under Australia's constitution. Mr Strange claimed the only roadblock he could see would be how to"integrate the Australian cricket team". Picture: Albert Perez/Getty Images In response to Mr Strange's reference to cricket, Mr Joyce said Australia would"help them out" by finding greater success in the sport in exchange for NZ's support in improving results in rugby.
