Horse trainer David Vandyke prefers animals over people and in the early morning hours it's their company that keeps him grounded in the present.

The popular horse trainer values this time of the day when things are quiet, people are waking up and he's alone with his horses.

"The birds get me back into the now as they're just sitting there enjoying the morning and I try and be a bit like them," he said."A lot of these birds I feed now I also fed their parents so they're the next generation, it makes me feel old, but I really enjoy it.Galloping to new heights "I was training a big number of horses in Sydney and thought I would come up and just have 16 [horses] in work and take a step back from the big time," he said.
