U.S. stocks opened down as investors weighed fresh data showing a drop in initial jobless claims. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.23% fell less than 0.1% soon after the opening bell, while the S&P 500 SPX, -0.57% shed 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.
44% dropped 1.6%, according to FactSet data, at last check. Initial jobless claims in the U.S. fell 13,000 to 216,000 in the week ending Sept. 2., the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had anticipated new jobless claims would rise to 230,000.
