, I watch the woman in front of me hand over two pieces of green paper money. She was using market money as it was intended.helps to address food insecurity, build community, and support local agriculture and business.
The markets want that green paper money to be a line item in the budget making food coupon funding stable and growing, not cut, says volunteer manager Jennifer Bolt. Seventeen families with food bank connections took part that summer. Wall said she was inspired by the B.C. Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program, which is fully government funded to the extent of $1.5 million, along with other smaller programs in Ontario.
The additional funding enables an additional seven families to shop locally. Since the program began, 167 families have participated in the Wolfville program, purchasing more than $82,000 of local produce with market money. The socially isolated, disabled and newcomer families have all benefited, Bolt says, and the funds go right into the pockets of the rural economy.
