Tobacconist McGahey's opened in 1880 and has since been handed down to four generations of the same family.

More than a century of history has been wiped from the streets of Exeter after the last independent retailer closed its doors for the last time.

But current owner Martin McGahey, 63, said he has decided to move the business online as he wants to wind things down before his retirement.He said: ‘It’s a very sad day,I felt the weight of four generations today. Mr McGahey, who took over the business from his father Michael in 1992, criticised what he says he is a lack of support for retailers in Exeter city centre.
