Elland Road was overlooked for Euro 2028 selection 32 years after it helped stage Euro 96 and it's clear to 49ers Enterprises what it has to do with upgrading the stadium

Elland Road was one of eight venues selected for Euro 96, the last major football tournament staged exclusively in England. Leeds United’s home was conspicuous by its absence from the Euro 2028 announcement made yesterday as 10 stadiums made the grade across the United Kingdom.

While the 1996 competition was confined to England, 2028 will take in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland too. Those nations have to be represented and then those in England must be well spread geographically. It’s hard for anyone to make a case for Elland Road ahead of Everton’s shimmering new place or the capacities and infrastructure of Etihad Stadium or St James’ Park. The vision for an improved ground in Leeds has been there since the centenary unveiling Angus Kinnear presented in 2019.

In the minutes for September’s Supporter Advisory Board meeting, it reads: “Discussion about the stadium improvements. It is an ongoing process and there is a lot more to be done.
