South Africa's Health Department invests R3.5 billion in expanding vaccines, in order to curb disease outbreaks.

is taking significant steps to bolster its immunisation efforts. It’s njecting R3.5 billion into the expansion of the vaccine program.

Health Minister, Joe Phaahla, unveiled this ambitious plan during a media briefing held in Centurion, following discussions with Health MECs.Despite South Africa’s robust childhood vaccination program, the nation has been grappling with recurring outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. In response to this ongoing challenge, the Department of Health is set to augment the existing vaccination regime with new vaccines designed to improve coverage and efficacy.

The vaccination is expected to significantly reduce the chances of these debilitating conditions reemerging within communities.In addition to this, a combination vaccine for measles and rubella is being added to the program. With a particular focus on safeguarding the health of young girls, especially during pregnancy, as it can potentially lead to birth defects.

These proactive changes have been recommended by the Ministerial-appointed National Advisory Group on Immunisation . There are scheduled to take effect from January 2024.This substantial investment in expanding the immunisation program underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of the South African population by safeguarding against preventable diseases.The infusion of R3.
