The city’s elected officials will consider all 42 business cases totalling an overall 2024 budget impact of at least $4.8 million during this year’s 2024/25 budget deliberations

All 42 business cases tabled by city council members and administration will be up for potential debate during 2024/25 budget deliberations. The meeting’s decision point was whether to include all business cases in 2024/25 budget talks, or knock any off the list early on.

Only “largely” status quo, because the base budget will be pared down by $10.5 million in order to reach city council’s desired tax increase of 4.7 per cent. Contracting in street sweeping is one example, which comes in response to this year’s contract prices coming in at double city estimates, prompting the city to cancel a section of the contract and do the work internally.

Although all 42 business cases have been punted to budget deliberations, each one will require a member of city council to champion it for a proposed amendment. This year’s direction for staff to cut $10.5 million from the base budget follows the direction city council gave city administrators during 2023 budget preparation to cut $17.8-million from that year’s base budget.
