Businesses say cost of living pressures, expensive airfares and concerns around crime are contributing to a slump in tourism in Central Australia, where the drive market is particular is lagging.

The Northern Territory's newly appointed tourism minister claims there is a strategy in place to revitalise Central Australia's tourism industry, which is continuing to haemorrhage millions of dollars in lost visitation.

It comes off the back of a disappointing tourism season for caravan parks and many other operators across Central Australia, as cost of living pressures, soaring airfares and crime concerns continue to bite.While tour group numbers are up, the drive market has continued to slump, with some businesses reporting a drop in bookings of up to 50 per cent.

"Everybody's low on coin, and throwing money into media campaigns and publicity agents didn't work in my estimation."
