Banged-up ambulances have left the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department in a bind – so much so that the city has had to rent a couple of vehicles.

In the meantime, though, the city has been paying a company called Elite Industries $200 a day per ambulance for the last two months. Lasky said the trouble began when the city sent two of its older ambulances out to replace the box parts of the vehicles.Lasky said it has taken a long time to get ambulances repaired. He offered a common explanation ever since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted manufacturing.

Lasky said the situation has not affected public safety. Jimmy Connick, president of the Mobile firefighters union, echoed that.Once the council approves the purchase, Lasky said, he expected the new vehicles to arrive within about a week and a half. That will allow the city to send three more 2016 ambulances out to have the box parts replaced, which Lasky said will be done one at a time.
