A Shorten Labor government would aim for half of all new cars to be electric by 2030 | p_hannam

A Shorten Labor government would aim for half of all new cars to be electric by 2030 and work with industry to lift car emissions standards in a bid to cut pollution and spur innovation.

In the year to September 2018, such emissions were about 19 per cent of national carbon pollution at just over 100 million tonnes - roughly equal second along with stationary energy and trailing only the electricity sector,"Cleaner cars and transport aren’t just good for the environment – they are cheaper to run," Labor said.

According to the plan, Labor would consult before setting a timeline to phase-in standards of 105 grams of carbon-dioxide per kilometre for light vehicles, consistent with Climate Change Authority advice. While drivers prefer the more agile performance, such as near-instant response and the lack of noise or exhaust, some have held off purchases because of perceived "range anxiety" of existing batteries and a lack of charging options.

p_hannam So Kodak invented digital photography but did not think it will take off. They went into bankruptcy because others took up the idea and ran with it. Fifteen years ago smartphones were a luxury item which only a few could afford. Electric cars are coming whether we like it or not.

p_hannam Great for our balance of payments, because we don't have the capability to make the batteries required let alone the charging stations. Yet another knee-jerk policy from a knee-jerk politician. Shouting Shorten is as dumb as Moron Morrison! We public are not that stupid!!!

p_hannam Bill, I support what you want but.....in reality it’s not doable.

p_hannam So many attacks on ALP and Shorten here... Trolls galore sent forth by a nervous government in the throes of the end of their reign.

p_hannam Shortens future for Australia: Come home in my electric car after a late night out, battery's almost dead so i put in on charge so it's be ready in the morning when i need it to go to work. Half an hour after i go to bed there is a power outage that lasts into the early morning

p_hannam Give up our SUV’s, tradie utes and muscle cars? For a lithium powered, internet controlled, over priced piece of iPhone on wheels. Can the Shooters Fishers & Farmers add ‘Petrol Drivers’ to their name! Then they have my vote.

p_hannam Whatnot

p_hannam When they can be the price of a regular car or cheaper than sure even though they are no better for the environment than Petrol car when the battery and the non green facts about wind turbines and solar panel manufacture are considered. But sure Bill

p_hannam Who’s going to make me pay $45,000 for the equivalent of a Corolla?

p_hannam Only by retrofitting existing cars with electric motors

p_hannam Any ideas how much it will cost to fully charge an electric vehicle? And how far will a full charge take me? ausvotes2019

p_hannam lol 11 years... yeah good luck..

p_hannam . '...aim for...' By 2030, they will probably be all electric, anyway. This is like his bulshit the other day about 'banning plastic bags'. Like, they're 80% banned already. And didn't Peter Garrett say HE was gouing to ban them? What a wanker Bill is.

p_hannam this is no big deal - it's going to happen regardless of who is in Govt. Bill is just taking the easy road hoping to con the great unwashed he appeals to.

p_hannam give us $5k subsidy as they cost $50k

p_hannam Ooh big effort pinky bill.

p_hannam Batteries...1. What happens when they need to be replaced? 2. Who is going to mine the raw materials?🙄
