New process uses supercritical CO2 to pulverize rocks and release valuable minerals for processing

Sudbury's Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation and the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator will be taking part in an online webinar in June that looks at a new way to break rocks.

The patented technology uses supercritical carbon dioxide to introduce the tCO2 into the rock pores where rapid expansion occurs causing the rocks to fracture, said a company video about the pulverization process. One of the key reasons for learning about new and better ways to break rocks is that it is a significant cost in the mining and milling process to release valuable minerals from host rocks," said the company.

The patented technology employs supercritical carbon dioxide to comminute ore along natural grain boundaries more efficiently. This translates into a less energy-intensive approach compared to traditional comminution methods, potentially reducing both operational costs and environmental impacts, said the company website.
