New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Treasurer Daniel Mookhey have handed down a big spending budget in the hope of addressing one of the state’s biggest challenges: housing.

In an interview with Sky News Australia on Wednesday, Mr Minns explained his budget was designed to tackle the cost of living in the “second most expensive city in the world”.conducted by Demographia International Housing Affordability Report.

“The major initiative in the last 24 hours is 30,000 homes for New South Wales – many of them will be for the private sector: 21,000 on government owned sites for the private housing market. Additionally, $1 billion will be directed towards the repair of 35,500 existing social housing sites. “We’ve completely re-zoned Sydney’s density levels, particularly around public transport… it’s been the largest re-zoning in the shortest period of time in the state’s history,” he said.
