Samsel Supply Co. will close by the end of 2024

Updated: Sep. 06, 2024, 4:08 a.m.The . CLEVELAND, Ohio — Samsel Supply Co.’s history is synonymous with Cleveland’s Flats and its Cuyahoga River. But by the end of 2024 the maritime supply business will close its doors.

“It’s been 66 good years,” Mike Samsel said. “Let’s go out when we’re doing well and when it’s the right time. And now is the right time.” Mike Samsel said the boat’s vacuum system was able to suck the oil off the surface of the water, a much more efficient system than what people were doing at the time — trying to soak up the oil with things like straw.

Mike Samsel said the family has been working for a few years to wind down the business, which is why Samsel Supply has sold most of the buildings it owns.
