Tesla fires could dampen electric car sales as industry ramps up EV production, auto analysts say

twice that many. Mercedes-Benz this month began taking orders for its new GLC, the first of 10 pure battery-electric vehicles. All told, manufacturers around the world are believed to be investing well over $100 billion in their electrification efforts, a large share of that going to BEVs.

Then, two weeks ago, firefighters in San Francisco tweeted that they had been called to a garage where another Tesla Model S was on fire. Though the technology is the most effective and affordable available right now, lithium-ion batteries need to be babied. The chemistry is quite sensitive to temperature variations, especially excess heat, and can experience what is referred to as a "runaway" condition if overheated or overcharged. Punctures also pose a particular hazard.

For now, the industry is focused on finding ways to minimize problems with lithium batteries. That includes using software that can better track the way batteries are behaving and take steps, if necessary, to keep them operating safely. Finally, the thermal control system that helps maintain the pack's optimum temperature is designed so that the liquid coolant drains away from the cells if there is a puncture, reducing the risk of short-circuiting.

Gas cars have 100,000 fires a year. Does anyone worry about that?

lorakolodny

lorakolodny Here's some context

'One particularly promising alternative is known as the solid-state battery.' For more on solid-state batteries and battery safety . . .

Forget the Tesla! What really breaks my heart is the damage that has been done to that beautiful Audi.

lorakolodny Probably not as much as BMW fires are going to damage their brand and the reputation of ICE vehicles . . . Neither one is good, but the weight of evidence is heavier against ICE fires. Just saying . . .

Ive seen plenty of Car-bq’s in my lifetime...... Non of them was a Tesla!! elonmusk If no one is out to get you....you’re doing something wrong, or nothing at all.

Now why would 'Tesla' fire effect EV sales? I thought you guys believed Tesla was a looser anyway.

Those batteries must be kept cool. That is an issue with any EV

Does anyone remember the Ford Escort? Engine fire was a standard option. Tesla is not even close.

Stop spreading Fear, Uncertainty and doubt guys! Are you in bed with big oil?

Ridiculously overblown. I have a 5 year old 2014 model S, it lives in 100 degree Florida sun. These 'incidents' are an ultra minority, a malfunction and assuredly have an identifiable cause that can have safeguards improved. iteration

stop.

Nothing but bad press on these Tesla cars. They seem dangerous. Allowing them on the streets is negligent.

Did it damage the Audi next to it That would be my concern. ShortTSLA

I have seen Prius catching fire too. I don’t think is inherently the brand. There’s still work to do

Slow news day Huhh
