Anonymous comments with racist, sexist and abusive messages that were posted for years on a jobs-related website for economists originated from numerous leading U.S. universities, including Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Chicago, according to research released Thursday.

Stanford’s investment portfolio grew 8.4% for the fiscal year ending June 30. This performance trailed the 10.1% median return for U.S. college and university endowments for the year, as preliminarily reported by Cambridge Associates. “Strong results in publicly traded securities were diluted by weaker performance in non-marketable asset classes, including private equity,” he said.

Next year, Stanford’s endowment is expected to disburse $1.9 billion to support academic programs and financial aid. The endowment also advances particular fields of study through professorships, fellowships and research funds. The endowment is a collection of thousands of funds, many of which are restricted by their benefactors to specific purposes.
