Caviar, privacy doors… Business class these days isn’t just pretty good, it’s incredibly good. It’s a different world. It’s also more accessible than you may realise.

It’s certainly the only conclusion I can come to as I sit here at 35,000 feet in my own private suite, doors closed to the outside world, reclining in my comfy seat, watching a movie on my big screen and eating caviar – actual, goddamned caviar, served with a mother-of-pearl spoon – paired with blinis and a shot of vodka.Sliding privacy doors are becoming the norm… Qatar Airways’ Qsuite.

You’re paying something like six times more for your flight than you really need to. You’re slapping down a few months’ rent or mortgage payments – though let’s be real here, anyone who pays for business class doesn’t have those things – for an experience that will last less than a day. Maybe less than half a day.But stick with me here. Because business class these days isn’t just pretty good, it’s incredibly good. It’s an entirely different world.

So let’s talk about what’s happening in Qatar business class, which was rated the best in the world by Skytrax this year .You have the QSuite, which is a seat with a sliding door, creating total privacy for the traveller. If you and your travel buddy grab the two centre seats, the QSuites can be converted into a double bed, with a sliding door on each side. That’s outrageously luxurious.

Qatar might be the leader, but it’s not the only airline offering crazy luxury in its business-class cabin. Delta Air Lines – weirdly, for an American carrier – has a cracking business class seat that also has a sliding door, ensuring total privacy.Emirates has no doors, but it does have plush leather seats, minibars and tablets for each passenger. The company’s A380s also have stand-up bar lounges at the back of the aircraft.
