Ongoing construction in downtown Nanaimo is causing a dramatic drop in business for some shops, owners say.

Construction signs and barricades are seen on Commercial Street in downtown Nanaimo Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024.

Crews have been digging up blocks of Commercial Street and some of its sidewalks for several months as they work on the project. Streeter said the city’s response doesn’t come close to countering the impact that the construction is having. “I feel for the people downtown, with all the construction going on,” said Shalema Gantt, owner of NAHS , a Nanaimo-based magazine.

According to Steven Johns, the owner of Commercial Street’s Red Door Decor, the result of the construction will be impressive, but he encouraged people to support local this Christmas.
