Opinion: Trump is changing the game by imposing tariffs. It’s unsettling to the cautious leaders of the corporate community, but small-business owners understand and appreciate it, writes Hector Barreto.

President Trump’s tough approach to trade with China is evidence that he’s an entrepreneur at heart. While his real-estate business is larger than the average independently held company, he has the instincts of a small-business owner, which are different from those of a corporate CEO.

Independent business owners take calculated risks in pursuit of innovation, growth and job creation. That’s why their half of the economy is more dynamic than the half in which risk-averse CEOs and boards prioritize share price and market share.

This is why I read the WSJ, so I can get the businessman's perspective. And not just from those cautious corporate leaders, but from those ignorant, imaginary small business owners who are Hispanic and Muslim and Immigrant and who love Trump because they appreciate tariffs.

So many ignorant tweets here. The US has used Tariffs as a tool since our founding. The first tariff was enacted in 1789. Tariffs have historically served a key role in our nation's foreign trade policy and as a key source of federal income. Some 242 tariffs are now in place.

Trump is changing the game by imposing stupidity as the new normal.

The economy has been slowly and not so slowly deteriorating ever since Trump first said tariff. Make of that what you will.

GREAT PRESIDENT WORKING FOR USA

Moreover, this article's narrative erroneously purports to 'personalize' the issue. Either TARIFFS THEMSELVES are helping or, as here, HURTING the U.S. ECONOMY. Citing Trump's alleged 'zeal' or 'personal negotiating acumen' is immaterial. COST/BENEFIT to CONSUMERS is the issue.

Right, sure. Small business owners that rely on Chinese imports 'understand it' is INJURING their business. These 'puff pieces' are ridiculous. Pick a class that should be furious and write a story claiming they 'get it' and 'support the President.' Please.

Wow, what a myopic and utterly meaningless perspective. The story that's going to affect us all, brain trust, is that Trump's self-centered and definitively political but confidently evangelized reactions continue to undermine faith in the dollar as the world's reserve currency.

Tariffs equal taxes. Thought GOP was against taxes? My how things have changed.

Your statement of “understand and appreciate” tariffs is WRONG because many don’t REALLY understand them at all. Being a small biz owner myself, I understand them..therefore I can NOT appreciate them.

Does Trump have a good history in business? Asking for a friend

That’s why their businesses stay small. There is no insight here.

Not just small business owners...but...ordinary Americans understand and appreciate it! You don't have to own a business to understand how money works! Especially American money.

No real businessman is going to make decisions to move factories or change supply chains due to these temporary punitive tariffs, you can’t predict what this President is going to do next so why base long terms decisions on his whim.

Love it when the base clicks, they will be paying more 😹

Keep on Trumpin!

People need to wise up to China. They are not our friend nor one of our allies. They are a communist country the US hoped to change by selling out to them, bending over backwards to appease them so they'll make our stuff and lend us money.

he is businessman not politician, Politicians all talk no action.

😐

I think Mr Trump has not read the wonderful book 'Free to Choose' by the American Nobel Laureate in Economics Milton Friedman! The 'tariff trap' caged the US progress by supporting the inefficient and unproductive in the past!

Terrible opinion. Unfollow.

Murdoch’s Fox has partnered w the Kremlin to inundate the US w propaganda designed to put & keep DT in the WH. Is Murdoch’s WSJ following suit?

Old news Mexico comes to the table.

So wondering is that better than War of what deep state does when they want to change from leaders around the world

LOL

Trump has a business mind the political class can’t grasp

Lol bullshit

mcm_ct all suckers.... nothing will be different than it was a week ago

Baloney. Look at the agreement. It is unenforceable with no metrics. Trump got zip once again.

Tariffs are tools to be used when needed. Trump understands that. “The business of America is business. “ -Calvin Coolidge. “It’s the economy stupid.” -James Carville. Liberal don’t understand such logic.

Cancelling my wsj subscription as I write this

Rude awakening for people trusting Trump. His whole career is about enjoying gyping people. Trump U students BEFORE being nominated. What's the matter with BASE? You don't know that? Munchkins in OZ singing 'because of the wonderful things he does!' when he does no such thing!

My freezer is a hotter take than this, wsj.

Unsettling to consumers who have limited funds to spend...Oh, & don’t have cuts or loopholes like ultra-wealthy cronie$, when tax time comes! Demo-Cra-Zy!

I am getting a subscription to WSJ!!

Multiple bankruptcies. Let's see his tax returns in order to understand if he really IS rich or just in hock and vulnerable to blackmail. This is Citizenship 101. There is NO reason at all to believe he is working for America despite his ironic MAGA slogan.

BS

Finally, someone with the balls to write the truth.

Attributing 3-D chess to an idiot. I have seen it all now.

they appreciate it? they are the ones paying the tarifffs! remember when the WSJ used to be respectable?
