It comes at a time when the sector has been spending heavily on preparations for a no-deal Brexit

BMW's mini factory in Oxford was closed during April to prepare for a Brexit which didn't happenIt comes at a time when businesses in the sector have been spending heavily on preparations for a no-deal Brexit, according to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders .The SMMT says investment fell to just £90m in the first six months of the year from £347m last year.

Although that figure was affected by some manufacturers bringing forward their annual summer shutdowns, the SMMT says output has now been falling for 13 consecutive months, and the underlying trend remains sharply downward. "In the first six months of this year, it's not been half of that £2.5bn. It's £90m. It's been a massive drop off, because we have that fear of no-deal.

But while Mr Hawes enthusiastically welcomes JLR's plan, he insists the company is an"outlier", and that the broader picture is very different, where investment is effectively stalled. Not all the sector's woes can be blamed on Brexit, however. Eight out of every 10 cars built here are exported, and sales in a number of major markets have declined sharply in recent months.

Last week, Mr Hawes wrote to the new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, urging him to reach a deal with the EU that allows parts and finished cars to cross borders freely, without being subject to tariffs or onerous customs controls.

And happening across Europe due to green demand. But go on, try to correlate it with Brexit.

Only in Britain?

......along with the rest if the world. More anti Brexit reporting from the BBC.

Your desperation warms me

You’re suggesting this is a UK problem. We all know why.

You should add ......and around the world!! What is it with the BBC....Why is everything only the fault of the UK?! Such biased reporting. Is this what we pay our licence fee for....propaganda?

Meanwhile in France....oh shite!

Who is investing in the car business anywhere?

A global trend!! The auto maker Ponzi Scheme is ending. This piece is the BBC at its absolute worse. The fact people are taxed £150 a year for this bilge is a disgrace. Thankfully we live in a more enlightened age, when people can see the crass BBC agenda a billion miles away

And around the world

usual BS from BBC Leggett & SMMT-not a word here about increasing Low emmision zones/Diesel bans concern/Electric Car opps/falling PCP end values but increased PCP Charges etc- blame Brexit is what EU pay BBC for...in spades

Yes it’s all this battery car thing destroying jobs on the false premise of green power.

Is this just in the UK? I’m very worried. What is the situation in other G8 nation’s? Oh. The BBC won’t tell me that or provide context because of its massive bias. Your license fee is toast

Yes your article suggests Brexit is to blame but can you answer why the biggest falls were before Brexit happened. So what you meant to say was car investment was plummeting and we're blaming Brexit cause we don't like Brexit instead of looking at actual causes...

I hope some of the downturn in sales is because people are recognising we can’t keep cluttering up the planet with the cast offs of rampant consumerism and are holding onto products longer than in the recent past.

More BBC gloom.

Yeah it's almost as though we should manufacture some of out own designs again.

Good old BBC..... They give people a bone with not much meat on it..... They know they people won't ask where the bone came from but will chew on it anyway

And everywhere else around the world. Tipping point of the combustion consumption. Nothing to do with Brexit.

when we finally realise our mistake will we have the courage to stand up and admit we got it wrong

Yes all your Climate Emergency reports along with Greta Thunberg must be having your desired affect

Nothing to do with Brexit of course....just like Honda closing, Nissan and Vauxhall warnings, over 440 major companies shifting their HQ's into Europe and 1100 billion moving from London to EU financial centres. It's those bloody Remainer's doing........

plummets across the world

BalanceBritain will ensure the tax avoiding promoters of Leave Arron_banks dyson etc and tax avoiding promoters of Remain richardbranson George_Osborne etc pay for Brexit , not us full paying uk tax residents/working/middle class. We are coming for the lot of you 1/9/19

🙈🙉🙊

Yesterday booming .... did you make this up?

More scaremongering from Brexit Biased corporation

Global slowdown nothing to do with Brexit, JLR late on the backfoot with electric. Diesel cars not selling due to EU bullcrap.

Surely this is what is needed a switch away from cars to public transport. We should encourage disinvestment in private cars production.

Total rubbish ..exported cars are now 20% cheaper than in 2016 with the weak £ .. endless whinging bt the car industry ..

More elite media shit , who gives a toss , would sink faster in the bankcrupt eu

Brexit

You' the BBC' are hard at work fear mongering a no deal BREXIT. Looks like it's working. Don't let it bother you because it's only other peoples jobs you are destroying. Still going out for the lavish lunches

What isn't been mentioned is this eco driven push to tax all hydrocarbon driven cars off the road. I guess that people are putting off a new purchase until a viable eco car hits the market.

Just in the uk yes?😂 blame brexit as usual!

But not due to brexit, this is a global down turn in the industry

So is that exclusive to UK...or repeated across EU? Irrelevant to Brexit maybe..more an over capacity issue.... as a consequence of poor EU directives favouring German diesels ( with fraudulent emissions for which redress is limited by EU for UK buyers compared to USA owners?

Quelle surprise!

More scaremongering

If we've to survive as a car maker massive investment is needed in electric vehicles and other new technologies.

Shock! 😱 We told you so! Yet areas with car plants still voted for Brexit. 🙄
