A $230 helmet can be just as safe as a $30 helmet. Here's out to pick the right one for you or your child.

With bicycles and electric scooters taking over many city streets, neurologists and emergency room physicians are seeing a rise in bike and scooter-related injuries. The most recent data sourced from the United States Department of Transportation revealed that 45,000 bicyclists were injured in traffic and 818 bicyclists died on U.S. roads in 2015.

Helmets can help protect you: “A quick way to determine a helmet’s level of protection is to look at its safety certifications. Most helmets indicate that they have passed either the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission or the European Committee for Standardization testing, but for the safest possible helmet, look for the Snell [this is a nonprofit that independently tests helmets] certification as well,” NYC-based internist Dr. Niket Sonpal tells MarketWatch.

Because there are so many helmets available and each one touts unique safety features, design components and even fashion elements, MarketWatch asked medical doctors and biking experts for their top helmet recommendations under $100. “Buying a [cheaper] bicycle helmet on a budget doesn’t mean skimping on safety,” says Matthew Butterman, a 25-year veteran of the bicycle industry and marketing director for BikeRide.

After spending $200 more, I’d sure hope it’s as safe as one for $30 😉
