The Dow Jones Industrial Average late-morning Wednesday was on pace for the worst daily drop in about six weeks, with the broader market logging a fresh session low.

The declines have accelerated since the the market's open and now put the major averages on track for the worst session since Aug. 23 after a reading on private-sector employment came in weaker-than-expected. The Dow DJIA, -1.89% was most recently off 530 points, or 2%, at 26,040, the S&P 500 index SPX, -1.77% was down 1.9% at 2,884, while those for the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -1.70% was sinking 1.8% at 7,770.
