IF YOU want a seat at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of King John at The Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon tomorrow night, it’ll be £52.50.

Not bad value, you might say, for the privilege of watching some of the country’s finest classically trained actors perform a play by the world’s greatest dramatist. But there aren’t many 16 to 25-year-olds who have that sort of cash to hand, and while those from prosperous backgrounds can perhaps call upon the bank of mum and dad, most can’t. Which is why the RSC’s decision to pull out of the sponsorship deal with BP two years early is so scandalous and sad.
