Alberta's finance minister says the province will have the luxury of diversifying its revenues once its budget is balanced.

Travis Toews told a Calgary Chamber of Commerce luncheon that the government should look at ways to become less dependent on volatile oil and natural gas royalties in the long term.

Toews made his remarks a day after tabling a budget that aims to reduce overall program spending by 2.8 per cent over four years and other measures to balance the books by 2023. Toews says the most effective way to get Alberta's economic engine firing again is to make the overall business climate friendlier with lower corporate taxes."We're taking the approach to broadly improve our competitiveness and business environment," Toews said Friday.

NDP Opposition Leader Rachel Notley blasted the government for giving tax breaks to big corporations while squeezing post-secondary students and people living with disabilities.

Not really a lot of provinces have diversified their economies fairly quickly as previous successful businesses and industries have closed down. They learned you can't put your eggs in one basket anymore and made necessary changes. Now its Alberta's turn to learn that lesson.

That is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say!

UCP says the only way to better the ecomomy is to bet all your dollars on oil and gas growth

“Thanks to falling global oil prices in 2014, personal income tax revenue is now Alberta’s largest source of revenue. But Alberta has the lowest overall tax rate of any province in the country — and no provincial sales tax.”

And the people keep voting for this crap

They have diversified. Oil and gas demand is not going down and will be fed by someone. Instead of profitting from ours and investing profits into green energy and technology we destroying our economy. Brainless twits.

Love the demographic in this picture.

Why would anyone not want as many revenue streams as possible? Why would you want to put all your eggs in one incredibly volatile and unstable basket? I get that Alberta loves its Oil and Gas and that's great and all but surely having other revenue from other sources is good?

So promote an oil and gas economy or you're an elitist? And the funny part is that there are more than enough people that will believe this thinking.

This is why their economy is in the shitter

When in reality, it’s a necessity.
