By the end of 2020, the CCMI intends to launch a new default app for messaging across all Android devices sold by the participating carriers, The CCMI will also work with companies, including Samsung and Google, to ensure RCS functionality across platforms. Prior to the formation of the CCMI, US carriers each offered their own of RCS, which, because of fragmentation, limited the functionality and adoption of the messaging standard.
RCS represents a major technical upgrade over the existing standard messaging formats, SMS and MMS. RCS supports many of the features that have become commonplace on over-the-top messaging services such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and GroupMe — the CCMI plans to use RCS to add typing indicators, support higher-resolution photo and video attachments, and improve group chat functionality.
Here are three parties that will be significantly impacted by the CCMI's launch of RCS, and some steps they could take in anticipation of the rollout: OTT messaging providers: RCS threatens OTT messaging, as it would enable default messaging apps to replicate many of the features that were once precluded on the SMS/MMS standard.
