It’s easy to get giddy on the promise of 5G in the United States. Now comes an early sanity check, writes rob_cyran.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said on Twitter on Nov. 18 he supports a public auction of a block of spectrum suitable for use in next-generation 5G networks.

Current holders including Intelsat, SES and Telesat had called for a private sale, under which they offered to contribute a share of the proceeds to the U.S. government. They said a private sale would be faster than an auction.
