LENGGONG: A local tourism group promoting the cottage industry in Lenggong Valley in Hulu Perak said they have seen very little impact on local businesses ever since Lenggong Valley received its Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) heritage status six years ago.

“There was a lot of expectation from the business community here, the tourist guides, resorts, homestay businesses and even the food and beverage outlets that Lenggong Valley was going to boom for the better and uplift everyone’s lives when it got its Unesco status," said A76 Lenggong Tourism Association chairman Asnan Mohd Yusof.

Asnan said that there was no effort to even put up a welcome sign telling visitors that they were entering a Unesco World Heritage site. Andy Kong, founder of Ipoh-based About Travel Sdn Bhd, said there is virtually no promotion or marketing carried out to promote Lenggong Valley by the state government.

“There is a disconnect about the way tourism in the state. You have all this wonderful attractions, but no information on how to get there and who to contact," he said.Meera Raj from Kuala Lumpur said she was interested in visiting Lenggong when she was in Ipoh last month but was not able to find any information on the place.
