The Trump administration has embarked on policy goals uniquely poised to impact stock prices, such as his trade war with China.

Trump often compares current economic conditions to those of the Obama era, frequently claiming that he turned around unfavorable circumstances that brewed under his predecessor.

On Obama's first inauguration day in 2009, the S&P 500 closed at 805.22. Over the next three years, the S&P index increased by 57 percent to 1,265.33, according to an analysis of stock market data. During the same time period under Trump, the index grew from 2,271.31 on Inauguration Day 2017 to 3,224.01 three years later, an increase of 42 percent.

Despite politicians' regular efforts to claim credit for market growth, direct attribution of stock market performance to any individual administration is not entirely accurate. A host of factors that influence stock prices, such as global economic health and consumer confidence, are not directly within the president's purview.

While cause-and-effect may be difficult to determine in the world of stocks, some policies are more directly impactful than others. The Trump administration has embarked on policy goals uniquely poised to affect stock prices, including setting off a trade war with China and pressuring the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates.

Lol. Haters. Just get over it.

We know Trump inherited Pres. Obama's economy!

Of course they are. This is trump's buddies inflating the market to make it look like the best. Now when he is out of office we will have the worst market in a long time and it will be the new guys fault instead of the truth which is the fall out from trump.

My 401k doesn’t agree.

Trump supporters ignoring this tweet and story! IMPOTUS45

Obama oversaw thr worst economic recovery since WW2

Obama never got the credit he deserved for pulling the economy back from the abyss because he didn’t boast and brag about it everyday. He handed realDonaldTrump a strong economy that’s in transition with workers of the future needing more education and greater skills.

So did job creation.

POTUS

Change your sentence structure and lede. Stock market performed better under Obama even though trump set record highs. Do better.

Hmmmm go figure

The difference is Obama pumped nearly $800 billion in tax payer funds into public works projects, $700 billion in taxpayer-backed loans into the U.S. banking industry, and provided a $80 billion bailout to the foundering American auto industry. Obama bought his results.

Sure Jan

It's one thing to have the market go up due to printing money (Quantitative Easing) it's another to have the markets off the charts due to a stellar economy. All the facts matter. Especially when it's a fake economy that was helping Obama.

That's because trump had a huge jump start from the Obama stock market performance and it is still performing from the Obama policies.

BetterunderObama

Nobody believes NEWSWEAK

Thanks, Obama.

It so easy to tell which 5th column rags are just propaganda arms of the democrats...

Wow. Thy headline & then you read the article and it basically says, yes Trump is “technically” correct but let us spin it to make it not so. They try to spin it but cant.

msnbc cnn cnnbrk MSNBC_Breaking Morning_Joe SteveRattner SteveKornacki jheil mikebarnicle mtp FaceTheNation ThisWeekABC Bombshell: 'OBAMA stock market BETTER than Trump so far' Despite DISTORTIONS & out right LIES, Obama OUTPERFORMED Trump 49% to 43% through TODAY.

ANFILOLI It's intellectually bankrupt to use Inauguration day rather than election day as your measuring stick. You ONLY did so to skew the data. Election day is the day that matters. So stupid.

DonVonCrump1 Now all the rich rich get to sell lump sum and buy low when it crashes!

Lol

FAKE NEWS

DebraMessing FakeNews

🤣

No schit Sherlock!

Seriously, only 54% growth from rock bottom. Yet 42% from the “Obama good years?” This is the weakest twist of statistics I have ever seen!

DebraMessing After he was impeached.

DebraMessing 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂The American People are not stupid.

DebraMessing Meanwhile if things were so great under Obama, why did PA MI and WI vote for a Republican for the first time in 40 years?

I don’t understand your math

Hey ...Play your numbers anyway you want. 52% growth over a depressed market is a lot less impressive than 46% over a growing market Basic math. And let's not include the amazing consumer confidence existing now, of which there was none under Obama.

Uh oh, Newsweek. Trump’s MAGA-Terrorists gonna be sending you guys death threats with bad grammar and misspelled 3 letter words.

What is the US debt trillions under trump and rising every day

If you weren’t such a liberal mag, you might have some credibility...but you don’t.

With all the chaos he’s created...I have NO idea how the market hasn’t tanked a dozen times. Used to be dogma: ‘The market hates uncertainty.’

Why is this not brought to the attention his supporters?!!!

The market gains under Obama are directly attributable to Ben Bernanke’s unprecedented liquidity provisioning. The gains under Trump have occurred in spite of Fed tightening. Definitely more impressive performance under Trump.

Who writes for Newsweek magazine, the homeless people that are living on the streets of LA? Can't be, because I think even they know what's going on...

it has been a great 10 years

Unserious! This is like saying stock market was higher under Clinton versus Reagan. You people are economic morons.

Don't remember Bozo breaking stock market records

Obama...the Wall Street President?

No one believes this Crap

I'm all for a strong market - but at what cost? TrumpLandslideVictory2020 It's a free market. By saying it's 'Trump's' stock market, you are implying he has control over it. If you are willing to concede he controls it, this means he manipulates it, and you're right, he does. If he manipulates it, the SEC should investigate that, and it's impeachable.
