The Ruby Princess, registered in tax haven Bermuda, appears to bear a 'flag of convenience'. Professor Joseph Cheer said that's why they offer 'a cheaper holiday, because they don’t have the same obligations' as other tourism organisations in Australia.

The Ruby Princess, registered in tax haven Bermuda, appears to be one such ship. Professor Cheer said cruise companies paid "very little tax" in Australia.

Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund last week emerged with an 8 per cent stake in Carnival Corporation & plc after a $US6 billion emergency recapitalisation due to the coronavirus. The Australian operations have contributed strongly to the company’s profitability since a $US400 million writedown in 2017.

The company had aggressively moved to bring popular brands into its stable and had pioneered a less formal style of cruising, he said. "The cruising industry is acutely sensitive to customer perceptions and concerns, particularly relating to health and safety," an Australian parliamentary inquiry found in 2013, noting "sharp declines" in passenger numbers following September 11 attacks and the SARS epidemic.

What about Alex Hawke?

How much are they paying their workers? I bet they are paying them a pittance too.

Cheap cruise because they don't pay there works the award wage hope they make a wage on tips ...there are slave ships and no one gets it and pay no taxes .band them in our waters..shameful ships

Newsflash! 99% of all ships of all types, some 100,000 vessels are registered under flags of convenience. Have been a crew member on many. Cruise ships couldn't operate here with wages or get the crew. Tired old argument!

And?

Just torpedo it and be done

Cancelled a European one booked for 2021. Thanks for the details. 😎

I guess with no sugar daddy to bail them out, (unless Liberia and Bermuda have enormous secret riches,) the cruise lines will go bankrupt, and the businesses will have new owners. Equity is not sacred.

Australia is going to have a huge debt and moving forward we are going to need everyone pay tax. If big companies don’t want to contribute they should not be allowed to operate in Australia.

Send the ships to Bermuda and all those other shady Caribbean islands that register these ships. They want all the benefits of being a tax haven and none of the consequences.

WTF

About time we have a min tax CarnivalCruise for basing ships that cause things like RubyPrincessTragedy in Australia I believe The tourism $$$ from cruiseships isn’t that high as most goes offshore to tax havens MichaelWestBiz what’s your thoughts?

Nor does Vrigin but they putting their hand out

Not do a lot of companies in Australia that aren’t registered in tax haven Bermuda. Talk about trying to blame the company. What about your boss and Twiggy oh and now probably the Pratt’s. 😡😡😡

The ship should be seized and forfeited to the government as part of a massive compensation claim against owner and operator

Shocking! It's no wonder NSW Health allowed their infected passengers to disembark into the wider community...err🙄 QANTAS pay no tax either due to creative accounting, where should they go?

elliemail Nor does your Murdochracy

geoffrey_payne Yes, these and other revelations add to my surprise when I hear that people are actually declaring that they'll be willing to go for a cruise when it is once again possible.

Just keeps getting better and better. Fs.
