I'm a New York restaurant owner who had to lay off my entire staff. Here's why I'm not losing hope

in upstate New York. The restaurant closed indefinitely following shelter-in-place orders, after 15 years in operation. This is what the experience was like for Brian.

We don't over-staff. We've always committed to keeping everyone fully employed, even in the offseason. The dining room at 1844 House. On Friday, March 13, we were told to go down to 50 percent capacity, which wasn't a bad thing for us because we're not like an Olive Garden with massive dining rooms. Our dining rooms have four tables in each room, and we have a reputation for being pristine. People feel safe here.I was raised by a single mother who worked as a cashier for 30 years.

Finally, we realized that our staff would be able to make more money on unemployment than if they were getting other payments from sick or family leave. The other business owners that tried to keep their entire staff on for one extra week just to go on Facebook and brag about doing good — I wonder if they really care about their staff. We had no choice but to lay off our entire front-of-house staff.

We would turn on the TV and Donald Trump was saying one thing, and then the governor would come in and say another. We just didn't know what to do. Finally, we just thought, please, enough. We're running this with our teenage children right now.

I don't care about a trillion dollar stimulus, because when you look at aid packages for the little family-owned business in a place like Potsdam, it's not going to be that significant. The idea that this pandemic could liquidate that nest egg and make us start over in our early 50s is scary.
