Businessman's dairy proposal puts pressure on Government to help struggling farmers

A prominent Victorian businessman is canvassing the Federal Government about a proposal to add 40 cents per litreAn independent proposal seeks to guarantee an extra 13 cents a litre for farmersThe dairy industry has been struggling with dollar-a-litre-milk, drought and a decline in farms

The proposal suggested that up to 40 cents per litre be added to the retail price of fresh milk and an "independent entity" would collect this revenue to pay it back to farmers. Mr Dahlsen's proposal would increase the price of fresh milk with the extra money delivered to farmers through an independent organisation. In his report, Mr Dahlsen calculated that an increase of 40 cents per litre on supermarket shelves would result in an extra 13.3 cents per litre at the farm gate, due to the complex nature in the way dairy farmers were paid.Dairy Australia said for most states "this meant the discontinuation of regulated sourcing and pricing of drinking milk".

Mr Dahlsen said the money would be paid to an independent entity "free of any influence from the processors or dairy farmers" and which would report to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.Mr Dahlsen stipulated that Dairy Australia should not serve as the independent entity.

Milk is cheap......its gone up 40c for two litres and many farmers would still battle even if the price doubled. Most of the the extra $$$$ will go to shareholders, many who are the richer farmers that have invested in the milk production. Cannibalism who eat their own.

Struggling farmers? They don't pay GST, they don't pay the fuel excise levy, they are able to use family trusts to income split and avoid tax, 40% rebate on new car purchases, none of this is available to ordinary PAYE taxpayers.

. The solution is called a 'co-op'. But farmers are too selfish to cooperate with each other. They get picked off one by one by the supermarkets saving their farm at the expense of the others... Until the supermarkets then screw them as well... .

. Hmmmmm Price goes up by 40 cents. Farmers get 13 cents. Simething doesn't add up... .
