As yet none of those carriers have said exactly how many of their people will be let go, or exactly when the job cutting will begin. But they aggressively are seeking volunteers who’ll accept inducements to retire early, take leave, or quit ahead of the time layoffs will begin. Based on the huge numbers of workers likely to be let go and on the thousands of planes that already have been grounded or permanently retired by U.S.
"Our national economy is in a recession, but the travel industry is already in a depression," said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow, who on Tuesday detailed the travel-related job losses thus far."Travel-related businesses have been hit disproportionately hard by the pandemic's fallout, and unfortunately our workforce is on the front lines of that struggle.”
The 8 million travel-related jobs wiped out in the U.S. since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic account for about a 22% of the 36 million people across the entire economy who no longer had jobs as of May 14. The next weekly unemployment report is expected on Thursday.
Now the creator of COVID-19 can have a toast, I guess.
