An Australian dairy company is rebranding a controversial line of cheese products that share a name with a racial slur, in an attempt to 'eliminate racism' from its brand.

"Coon" cheese will be rebranded over concerns about its offensive name. An Australian dairy company is rebranding a controversial line of cheese products that share a name with a racial slur, in an attempt to "eliminate racism" from its brand.

Saputo Dairy Australia said in a statement released on Friday that it would rename the cheese following a "careful and diligent review" of the situation. "After thorough consideration, Saputo has decided to retire the Coon brand name. We are working to develop a new brand name that will honour the brand-affinity felt by our valued consumers while aligning with current attitudes and perspectives," the company said. "We believe we all share in the responsibility to eliminate racism in all its forms and we feel this is an important step we must take to uphold this commitment," it added.

Indigenous people, who make up 2 per cent of Australia's population, suffered for decades from legalized discrimination and abuse. They still face severe discrepancies in terms of health, education and employment compared with white Australians.

This is totally ridiculous, this is the gentleman‘s name who invented this cheese

Everthing is related to racial staff

Someone should change their name to Coon Spic Honky McWetback. That would be awesome

It’s actually not...It’s the owners name...Has anyone heard of context?

It's the founders name ffs! I think crackers are racially offensive! 🤡🤡🤡🤡

Hey can nice headline ,how about saying a family name on a product is upsetting people

As a young lad I used to drink Thomas Spearchucker's condensed milk. The Spearchuckers gave so much back to their community So many good memories

So it has nothing to do with race it's named after the founder of the company. But the BLM maniacs need to have a change because it's a homonym of a slur? This just makes us hate intersectionalism and BLM not make us more sympathetic

Maybe they could just add the word “family” to the packaging: Coon Family Cheeses

The world is saved one renaming at a time hahahahaha🤣. What a joke!

Butt hurt people....seriously smh

Racially offensive? It's the man's name, is that specific slur used anywhere else than parodies and movies depictions of 1950's deep south hillbillies and KKK members? how does that have anything to do with Australia?

Coon cheese is named after its American creator, Edward William Coon (1871–1934) of Philadelphia, who patented a method, subsequently known as the Cooning process, for fast maturation of cheese via high temperature and humidity. FINALLY!🙄

Jane Lynch better change her name too because its too offensive.

The raccoons will be celebrating tonight. Trash cans for all! 🥳🥳🥳

It’s the name of the owner. So does that mean his family should change their names?

What about politicians that have that as a last name?

No, they finally gave in to the uneducated/intolerant self-appointed guardians of wokeness whose ignorance of history is on full display. The cheese, named after Edward William Coon (1871-1934), is not associated with racism in any way except 2 those who see nothing else but.

People offended are the ones actually associating themselves with the slur. No one else is associating them. It’s a brand of food named after someone’s surname.

PC snowflakes at it again, that cheese has been around since 1935 and is named after the founder, not a slur 🤦🏻‍♂️🙄

this is ridiculous. when are casinos going to rename Black Jack?

'coon' is a deeply offensive racial slur directed to Aboriginal Australians, this is the right move.

“News”? Your “newsroom” really should be ashamed of themselves. Do Matthew Coon Come next, see how far that enhances your reputation. “Offensive last names”.

CTV NEWS is finally admitting their left wing stance by celebrating a private business being forced to remove their family name from the company logo stating their family name is racist!

Coon to me is nothing more than a raccoon.

World problems according to lamestream media.

Are Cheese Nips next?

Everything with the name monkey, including monkeys themselves also need to change their names.

The internet has convinced me that I have been wrong all along - everybody should NOT be entitled to an opinion. Some are just too stupid to handle the responsibility

Its thier last name...

The company is named after American cheesemaker Edward William Coon.

So when are we going to take down all the music with racist language and violence? We change the name of a cheese, sports teams and statues. Worst part is, none of this shit solves racism. Need REAL solution not bandaids!

A word in one country do not mean it’s the same in all country’s There was nothing inherently racist about the guts last name.

If noone took offense to it in 2019 then leave it the fuck alone in 2020

whats next - are these snowflakes going to protest other names like ...

Finally renaming? 😂

Story reminds me of this superhero union.

White sugar, black licorice, yellow mustard - sick of the racism in our food supply!

I've never even heard of shit cheese 😂

Mr. Coon's family will be quite upset to find that their last name is racially offensive.

Good! Finally! Hopefully Ritz will follow soon!

Coon, raccoon?

its the guys last name for fucks sake.
