On August 13, the wildly popular game "Fortnite" got an update on Apple and Android smartphones that allowed players to bypass the companies' digital payment systems and pay the game's creator, Epic Games, directly.
The game is now unable to be downloaded through the Apple App Store, and cannot be updated either, leaving iPhone and iPad players who still have the game on their devices left behind after the new "Fortnite" season premiered on August 27. The promo, for the battle royal game "PUBG Mobile," is more than just Apple giving prime real estate to a major "Fortnite" competitor, and there's no indication the article is a direct attack on "Fortnite." Tapping through brings users toan ongoing spat between the "Fortnite" maker and AppleOn August 13, "Fortnite" players on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices started seeing a new payment option in the game.
By doing this, Epic intentionally circumvented paying Apple and Google their respective cut of goods sold through their digital storefronts: 30%, an industry standard for digital platform holders like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and others.
