China's ability to garner support for the Global Initiative on Data Security will be limited by global reliance on services from US Big Tech companies

China's Global Initiative on Data Security aims to promote globalized competition across tech markets.Yi said that the Global Initiative on Data Security would set standards such as forbidding backdoors, maintaining a globalized supply chain, and complying with law enforcement requests within host countries.

China's Global Initiative on Data Security takes direct aim at the US' Clean Networks program, which seeks to significantly curtail the global ambitions of the Chinese tech sector. by the US State Department in August 2020, the Clean Networks program promises the formation of a transnational alliance, in which the member nations agree to not use Chinese technology spanning their cloud, mobile app, mobile phone, and telecom equipment sectors.

The State Department claimed that more than 30 nations and territories have committed to the Clean Networks program, though they did not go into greater detail. The Clean Networks program would in essence force countries to pick a side, opening their markets to either US or Chinese technology companies.

China's ability to garner support for the Global Initiative on Data Security will be limited by the global reliance on services from US Big Tech companies. Across several of the most important technology sectors, US firms hold considerable global market share: In the cloud infrastructure services market, for instance, US firms accounted for more than 57% of the market in Q2 2020,
